PLB Q&A with Sydney Smith

McDonogh (Md.) – 2022 Defender – Duke University commit

PEACELAXBLOG Q&A

I’d like to thank all my coaches I’ve had over the years, and most importantly my family. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t had my family by my side every step of the way.

SYDNEY SMITH

PeaceLaxBlog: What made you choose this school?

Sydney Smith: Duke really felt like home. The coaches and the girls made me feel welcome and respected (over zoom no less!). It is the perfect blend of academics and athletics, and their campus is absolutely gorgeous.

Awards and Accolades

I won a IAAM Championship with McDonogh in 2019.Under Armour 150 (2019-2020), Dean’s List, Honor Roll, Nike Elite 120 1st Pick (2020), Class Character Award (2020), Most Influential Freshman Award (2019) , SGA Co-President

PLB: How has the COVID-19 Pandemic affected you?

SS: COVID-19 definitely affected me when it first started. McDonogh converted to virtual school, and it just felt very abnormal. I just needed to learn how to adjust to the new lifestyle, but I’m eternally grateful I got to spend the time with my family!

PLB: How would you describe your recruiting process?

SS: My recruiting process was stressful to say the least. COVID-19 really threw a wrench in my plans. My club team and I didn’t really get the chance to showcase our talents over the summer except for a few tournaments in late August. Coaches weren’t allowed to come see us in person because of the dead period, so everyone kind of relied on film. September 1st came around, and all I did was hope that the film was enough to get coaches attention. I guess it worked! From then on it was just scheduling zooms with schools I was really interested in… the rest is history!

Favorite Quotes that You Live By?

Sydney:

“Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must out run the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running.” –

African Proverb

PLB: What do you do for fun?

SS: I like to spend time with my friends and family because they’re the ones that make me laugh my hardest.

PLB: What do you want to be when you grow up? And Why?

SS: I want to be a psychologist. A lot of people in this world struggle with their mental health everyday, and it sometimes prevents them from being their best selves or doing what makes them happy. If I could just help them take those steps to become their best selves and be happier than they were before, I think I could definitely help make the world a better, happier place.

PLB: Once Coronavirus is over where would you like to visit?

SS: I’d like to go to my grandmother’s and have a huge cookout with all my family.
